Understand Shipping Estimates

An estimate is a planning figure based on inputs. Its value depends on how closely those inputs match the goods and parcel you will actually submit.

Destination and goods inputs

Destination, goods type and an available route affect what can be estimated. Enter the actual destination and a realistic description of the selected goods; a search result title is too little context for a meaningful shipment figure.

Destination, contents, weight and dimensions are the useful starting inputs for a shipment estimate.

Item weight versus packed weight

Individual item weights may exclude outer packaging. Once items are boxed together, the measured parcel weight can differ from the sum of the seller’s item descriptions.

Actual and dimensional weight may be compared under the selected route’s stated rules.

Volume and the route's stated divisor

Some services compare actual and dimensional weight under route-specific terms. Use the divisor and measurement rules shown by the selected carrier or agent, not a generic number borrowed from an unrelated calculator.

An item’s weight is not necessarily the measured weight of the packed parcel.

Which charges an estimate includes

An estimate may include certain charges and omit others. Read its displayed breakdown and conditions before comparing it with a different route’s headline amount.

An estimate can change after packing or selection; the final amount follows the parcel and current service terms.

Comparing like-for-like estimates

Compare estimates for the same destination, contents and packed dimensions. A cheaper figure based on lighter or smaller input is not a like-for-like alternative.

Re-estimating after rehearsal

If packing or rehearsal produces measured parcel information, use it to revisit the estimate. This guide explains the inputs; the route-comparison guide addresses eligibility and service trade-offs.
